As an industrial designer, you can find yourself working with engineers, marketers and manufacturers in a varied range of industries. Our graduates have skills that are both multidisciplinary and transportable, and can go on to design for boutique studios or huge global brands. Industries that demand industrial designers include the automotive, electronics, furniture, packaging, exhibition, sporting and mining industries.
Cars, mobile phones, lighting, furniture, mining vehicles, medical equipment, surfboards, hair dryers - from very large projects, to very small consumer items, industrial designers embrace art and technology. They consider form and function to create consumer or industrial products that improve society, enrich our culture and contribute to our economy.
In our studio-focused industrial design course, you'll gain the practical, technical and conceptual skills you need to step straight into industry as an industrial design professional. You'll explore how good design can change the way we use a product, ensure a product stands out from its competitors, and make a product more sustainable, efficient and effective.
In the studio, you'll explore innovation and aesthetics, and apply the knowledge you gain in specialist materials and manufacturing, ergonomics and engineering units. 3D design and drawing studies help you experiment with ideas and document your designs.
Tailoring your studio projects to match your passion means you'll create a graduate folio that reflects your design strengths and your individual career goals. By the end of forth year, you'll be able to confidently work to a brief to develop an effective, attractive and marketable product, from initial research through to final prototype.
With leading facilities such as our automotive clay-modelling studio, people like top industrial design professional Professor Mark Armstrong (Blue Sky Design), and working relationships with companies like Volgren buses, industrial design at Monash is in a unique position to prepare and connect you with industry.
While some of our graduates are taking leading roles designing for brands like Frog, Dyson and General Motors, others are riding away with top prizes all by themselves - like graduate Robert Dumaresq, who won gold at the Australian International Design Awards for his Switch folding commuter bike.
