Why study Bachelor of Fine Art?

The Monash Bachelor of Fine Art focuses on the creative and research skills required to pursue a career as a contemporary artist. The course enables students to establish critical and formal expertise, as a foundation for artistic practice. Students advance their skills, thinking and knowledge over the three years of the course, to build a sophisticated individual visual language that opens up a vast range of contemporary art forms and practices.

Throughout their degree, fine art students develop their own art methodology by working closely with nationally recognised and emerging artists. Students also have access to studio spaces and state of the art facilities.

Career opportunities

A high number of our graduates succeed as practising artists and are high visible in the art community. Others work at independent, and commercial levels. Our alumni have successful careers in a vast array of allied arts professions, including arts education, curatorship and administration in museums, galleries, community arts programs, art and design consultancies, and conservation organisations.

Equivalent Australian Year 12

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English and a minimum ATAR of 70.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL

VTAC APPLICANTS:

Application Kit: Applicants must download a kit online by 30 September. Applicants can access the kit at Open Day. Telephone requests will not be accepted. Applicants must complete and submit the kit by 7 October.

Interview and folio presentation: Details will be sent to applicants by 7 November. Applicants must attend in November. Advisory letters will be sent to applicants by 12 December.

DIRECT APPLICANTS:

International Applicants: All applicants must submit a folio of 10-15 images of their work for assessment. Please refer to the Faculty of Art & Design website for further details.

Local Applicants: All local applicants must apply through VTAC. Please refer to the information above.

Enrolment obligation
