After you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you will be eligible to teach in Victorian primary schools and related teaching services. You will be specifically qualified as a physical education and outdoor education teacher, depending on the stream you studied.
You may also pursue a career in a sports and outdoor education-related field, including sports management, outdoor recreation, sports training and development, recreation and leisure, commercial recreation or tourism.
Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) - the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.
If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.
This double degree allows you to combine your passion for sport and outdoor recreation with a career in primary school teaching. The course prepares you to be a confident primary teacher with specialist skills in physical education and outdoor education. In addition, you will also acquire skills and knowledge in sport and outdoor recreation.
Our sport and outdoor recreation program provides you with a deep understanding of the relationships between movement, recreation, health and wellbeing, physical education, leadership and the environment. You will study sport and outdoor recreation theory, and undertake exciting professional placements in coaching and instruction, leadership and programming, and sport education. Our practical fieldwork program covers a range of settings, focusing on the employment and training needs of sport and outdoor recreation industry staff. Throughout your degree, you can take advantage of the fantastic sport and recreation facilities available at our Monash Peninsula Activity and Recreation Centre.
Core education studies focus on teaching and children's learning in a social setting. You will complete units in learning areas, including English, the arts, mathematics, health and physical education, science, the humanities, and information and communication technologies. You will study teaching and learning theories for primary school children, and curriculum development and implementation. When you graduate, you will be equipped to teach children to develop their creative, physical, intellectual and social abilities, as well as their literacy and numeracy skills.
You will gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. These placements connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching. If you want the chance to teach overseas, you have the option of doing an international professional placement. This is an amazing opportunity to get first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands and South Africa.
This course consists of core and elective units in education and sport and recreation, and professional and fieldwork placements for each. You will complete the outdoor experience and physical activity requirements of each sport and outdoor recreation unit, totaling 40 to 60 days.
