Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) for 2010

Course overview

Biotechnology is an exciting area of interdisciplinary research and development activity. The course offers two strands - medical biotechnology and industrial biotechnology - both of which build on a core of basic science, including biochemical and microbiological techniques.

The medical strand is for students interested in medical aspects of biology. They also undertake studies in physiology, and consider the biochemical basis of disease, infectious disease, immunology and immunopathology, epidemiology and diagnostics.

The industrial strand covers recombinant DNA technology, natural products chemistry, principles of modern instrumentation, experimental design and data analysis. Final-year students may take part in biotechnological research in an elective applied research project. Students may select additional units from areas such as environmental science, computing and statistics.

Career outlook

Depending on the strand studied, graduates may find employment in areas such as animal breeding programs, production of vaccines, antibiotics, drugs and diagnostic kits, waste treatment processes, environmental monitoring programs, mineral extraction, quality control, production of alternative fuels, synthesis of organic chemicals and polymers, production of flavourings and sweeteners for the food industries, and medical research.

Entry requirements

Minimum entrance requirements

Equivalent Australian Year 12.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE

Diploma graduates

To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with:

a science-based diploma will require average results of at least 60% (70% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc, and 80% to be considered for BScAdv(Hons))

a non-science-based diploma will require average results of at least 70% (80% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc).

Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed:

a science-based diploma will require average results of at least 70% (80% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc)

a non-science-based diploma will require average results of at least 80%.

TAFE Certificate graduates

Science-based certificate-level studies will be considered where the applicant has average results of 80% or above. For applicants who have also completed VCE, both qualifications will be considered. No credit is granted for these studies.

University

Two single units satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants for the single degree programs, except BScAdv(Hons), should have at least a 60% average in their studies. Applicants for science double degree programs should have at least a 70% average in their studies.

Those without Year 12 prerequisites for particular courses need to complete units that correspond to these prerequisites (eg Mathematics Methods for Science/Computer Science).

These studies need to have been completed no more than five years prior to admission.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-one of biology, chemistry, mathematical methods (either), physics, geography, psychology or specialist mathematics and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

English at a minimum of grade four at standard level and one of psychology, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics (SL or HL) or mathematical studies

University entrance requirements

Minimum entrance requirements for admission to Monash University Australia.
