Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging for 2010

Course overview

The degree provides the academic and practical experience to practise as a radiographer. Throughout the course, students divide their time between classes on campus and the university teaching hospitals and private radiology practices. In first year, students study radiologic physics, radiographic imaging methods, radiologic biology, radiographic anatomy and pathology of the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems, radiation protection, safety and professional skills, including ethics. Second-year studies include trauma imaging, pediatric radiography, fluoroscopic and mobile imaging, digital-image processing and digital subtraction angiography while students also develop their professional skills in aspects of patient care. Third year looks at medical ultrasound and computed tomography, including relevant clinical studies. Students study cross-sectional anatomy and pathology, radiologic biology, the physics, instrumentation and imaging methods for whole body CT including multislice, ultrasound of the abdomen, breast imaging

and associated medical imaging dosimetry.

Fourth-year studies include magnetic resonance imaging, clinical experience in CT and MRI and research in medical imaging. This degree provides for students to graduate with honours based on meritorious performance throughout the course.

Career outlook

Most graduates will pursue careers as radiographers and work in collaboration with radiologists and other specialist medical practitioners to provide patients with a range of diagnostic and investigative examinations. Radiographers work in medical imaging departments within the public or private health care system and in private radiology practices and clinics. Although many graduates pursue a career in general radiography and computed tomography, opportunities exist to specialise in ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, management, research and in industry as medical applications' specialists.

Australian: The course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Radiography and graduates are eligible to work throughout the Commonwealth of Australia.

International: Graduate of the course are eligible to apply to be registered by the Health Professions Council in the UK and sit the Registry Examinations of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
