Course overview

The graduates of this degree are well prepared to teach throughout the primary years of schooling and into the early years of secondary. The degree focuses on the teaching and learning of primary school age children in the key learning areas of the arts, English, mathematics, health and physical education, science, SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment) and technology. Learning and teaching theories are examined, along with curriculum development and critical reflection on issues in education. Throughout the four years of the degree opportunities are presented for a range of field placements to be undertaken in a variety of settings, including overseas.

Accreditation

Australian: The Bachelor of Primary Education provides initial preparation for primary school teachers. Graduates will be eligible for registration and employment in Victoria as primary school teachers within state, independent and Catholic schools and related teaching services. Students undertaking the Middle School option available at Gippsland will be eligible for registration and employment in Victoria to teach P - 10 in their discipline area for the secondary years. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check registration and employment requirements with local authorities.

International: All graduates are eligible to teach in Victoria in their field of specialisation. While many graduates hold a range of interstate and overseas teaching positions, applicants are advised to check with local authorities regarding teacher registration requirements.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE applicants who have completed any course at the TAFE Certificate IV and above level will be considered on academic merit.University: There are no specific units recommended, however studies that have a language or mathematics bias and/or relevance to education studies may assist in the selection procedure. These studies need to have been completed with at least a credit average and no more than 10 years prior to admission.

VCE prerequisites

Units 1 - 4-any two units from further mathematics, general mathematics, specialist mathematics or mathematical methods (either). Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

English and mathematics (any) at a minimum of grade four at standard level.
