After you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you will be eligible to teach in Victorian primary schools and related teaching services. If you are studying at Gippsland and chose to complete the middle school option, you are also eligible to teach years seven to 10. If you want to teach interstate you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.
Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) - the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.
If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.
When you become a primary school teacher, you take on one of society's most vital, rewarding and challenging roles - shaping the next generation. Our dynamic faculty marries intellectual and research rigour with experience and practicality. You will benefit from learning alongside our experienced primary education academics and leading researchers.
The Bachelor of Primary Education gives you a comprehensive background in a range of learning areas, including English, the arts, mathematics, health and physical education, science, the humanities, and information and communication technologies. You will study teaching and learning theories, and curriculum development and implementation. When you graduate, you will be equipped to teach children to develop their creative, physical, intellectual and social abilities, as well as their literacy and numeracy skills.
You will gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. Placements will connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching.
And, if you want the chance to teach overseas, consider an international professional placement. This amazing opportunity gives you first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands and South Africa.
This course consists of core and elective education units and studies in primary education learning areas. If you are studying at Gippsland, you have the option of completing a middle school specialisation that qualifies you to teach up to year 10.
