You'll receive one-on-one instrumental teaching to develop your solo and ensemble performance skills. You'll have a number of opportunities to study overseas. For example, jazz and popular studies students travel to Italy and New York in alternate years to study and perform with world-renowned musicians such as James Morrison, Claire Bowditch, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, George Garzoni and Aaron Goldberg.

A minimum of Certificate IV with at least a distinction (70%) average is required to be considered for admission. Recommended studies include music, performing arts, humanities or social sciences. Some advanced standing may be granted for TAFE studies.
SINGLE UNIVERSITY UNITS
Applicants will be considered for admission with two single units completed at a credit (60%) average. Additional units (above the minimum of two) will enhance a student's application. Students are encouraged to consider units that relate to music, performing arts, humanities or social sciences. Credit may be granted for these units. Credit for any other previous studies will only be granted from those completed no more than 10 years prior to admission, however qualifications gained more than 10 years prior can be used for admission.

Students undertaking this specialisation can expect to acquire experience and skills in music composition. The program offers supervision of students' compositional projects and encourages work in various media, including traditional, electronic, and contemporary solo and ensemble combinations.
The creative music technology program is focused on the creative application of technology within professional music, sound, broadcast and multimedia and research contexts. Students will develop creative and music technology skills for employment and research within new media, composition, recording and performance creative industries. The program explores the use of music, sound and media, and promotes creative outcomes enable through current technologies.
In ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures), students explore selected music cultures of Asia and/or Africa, and may learn to perform in an Indonesian gamelan and in other Asian and African traditions.
In musicology (the academic study of music), students explore music history, biography and historiography from various periods and perspectives.
Students with a strong musical aptitude undertaking this specialisation are expected to acquire an assured technique and an awareness of the history of performance style and practice. Students develop their stylistic understanding and interactive musical skills by performing in a variety of ensembles.
