Why study Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science?

The double degree offers science students greater communication skills and arts students a strong technological or scientific base. Students complete at least one major sequence and one minor sequence in arts, and at least one major sequence and one minor sequence in science. The four sequences must be in different areas of study. The major sequences and units offered in this degree are any of those offered as part of the single Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees. Students also complete two science core units.

Career opportunities

This degree provides a foundation for a career in the vast field of Science or for a career in a broad range of fields available to Art graduates. Opportunities for graduates of this combined degree are extremely diverse and may include work in laboratories and research institutes, in government and industry in fields related to technology, production, environment, agriculture, minerals and resources, in planning agencies, management and administration, public relations, human resource management, and marketing.

-Certified chemist status with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (students who complete a major in chemistry are eligible)

-Graduate membership of the Australian Institute of Physics (students who complete an approved major sequence in physics, plus required units in mathematics are eligible)

Equivalent Australian Year 12.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE Diploma graduates

To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with a science-based diploma will require a minimum average result of at least 70%

Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed a science-based diploma will require a minimum average results of at least 80%

TAFE Certificate IV graduates

Science-based certificate IV level studies will be considered where the applicant has average results of 80% or above. For applicants who have also completed VCE, both qualifications will be considered. No credit is granted for these studies.

University

Two single units satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants should have at least a 70% average in their studies.

Studies must have been completed within a five years of intended commencement.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-one of biology, chemistry, mathematical methods (CAS), physics, geography, psychology or specialist mathematics, and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • One of biology (any), chemistry (any), geography (any), mathematics SL, further mathematics SL, mathematics HL, physics (any) or psychology (any), and
  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL).

Semester two (July)

This course currently doesn't have places available for mid-year entry.

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.
