Career opportunities

Business graduates have a huge range of career opportunities, and an accounting major further improves these options. Our graduates work all over the world. They work in finance, accounting, banking and insurance. They work for the government, corporations and themselves. The range of career options depends on the subjects chosen but, given we offer open electives and a specialisation in accounting, graduates will be able to explore several career paths.

Examples of roles that graduates can pursue include accountant for a large corporation or small business, tax accountant for an individual or business, business analyst in a bank or consulting firm, entrepreneur running their own business, or self-employed book keeper that looks after a variety of clients.

Why study Bachelor of Business (Accounting)?

Accounting is the language of business. Accurate and innovative accounting forms the basis for decision making by the owners and operators of small and large enterprises. Our degree will give you a rigorous education in accounting, while also preparing you to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing business environment.

Our degree offers core units that introduce you to the key principles of business, including marketing, accounting, management and economics. You will complete a major in accounting, as well as eight open electives in Faculty of Business and Economics programs, or other faculty disciplines. The Department of Accounting and Finance also runs international study tours, where you have the opportunity to meet the top accounting executives of leading organisations, including KPMG, L'Oreal, Intel, Google, Nike, Zara, General Motors, Disney, Swiss and National Bank.

This course consists of six core business units, a major in accounting, eight open electives, and additional units in the Bachelor of Business at the Caulfield campus to reach the required minimum of 16 units. It is possible to form a second major from your open electives.

===TAFE===

Completed qualifications at Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma level are required. Students should normally achieve at least a 75% to 80% average to be considered for admission. Preference will be given to students whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. Note that the english and mathematics prerequisites for courses must be satisfied.

===University===

Applicants require a minimum of two units, although in normal circumstances this minimum alone is unlikely to be sufficient. Preference will be give to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Studies need to have been completed no more than five years prior to admission. Students should normally achieve at least a 60% (credit) average to be considered for admission, although students who only complete the minimum number of units (two) may require higher grades.

===Mathematics prerequisite===

Applicants are required to have successfully completed VCE units 3 and 4, with a study score of at least 25 in mathematics (any), or their interstate/overseas equivalents, for admission to these courses.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 25 in mathematics (any).

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
  • A score of at least 4 in mathematics SL or 4 in further mathematics SL or 4 in mathematical studies SL or 3 in mathematics HL.

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.

ACCOUNTING

Accounting is the systematic recording, reporting, and analysis of financial transactions. It can be done on a large scale - for international corporations - or for individuals or for any sized business in-between. There are agreed national and international rules and regulations that govern the work of accountants. Accounting allows a company to analyse its financial performance, and report important statistics such as profit and loss to managers and shareholders.
