Career opportunities

Business graduates have a huge range of career opportunities, and a banking and finance specialisation further improves these options. Our graduates work all over the world. They work in retail, finance, banking and insurance. They work for the government, finance companies and multinational corporations. The range of career options depends on the subjects chosen but, given we offer open electives and a specialisation in banking and finance, graduates will be able to explore several career paths.

Examples of roles that graduates can pursue include self-employed financial planner, stockbroker for a national stock exchange, lease finance expert for a small start-up, treasury manager in a government department, entrepreneur running their own business, or investment manager for a large financial corporation.

Why study Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance)?

Banking and finance experts affect many people with their decisions on the circulation of money, granting of credit, making of investments, and provision of banking services. This degree is ideal if you are after a career in the banking and finance industry, particularly commercial and investment banking, corporate finance, stock markets, capital markets, or derivative markets.

Our degree offers core units that introduce you to the key principles of business, including management, accounting, marketing and economics. You will complete a major in banking and finance, as well as eight open electives in Faculty of Business and Economics programs, or other faculty disciplines. The Department of Accounting and Finance also runs international study tours, where you have the opportunity to meet the top accounting executives of leading organisations, including KPMG, L'Oreal, Intel, Google, Nike, Zara, General Motors, Disney, Swiss and National Bank.

This course consists of six core business units, a major in banking and finance, and eight open electives.

All applicants should note that the english and mathematics prerequisites for the courses must be satisfied.

==TAFE== Completed qualifications at Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma level are required. Students should normally achieve at least a 75% to 80% average to be considered for admission. Preference will be given to students whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. Note that the mathematics prerequisite for courses must be satisfied.

==University==

Applicants require a minimum of two units, although in normal circumstances this minimum alone is unlikely to be sufficient. Preference will be give to applicants whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Students should normally achieve at least a 60% (credit) average to be considered for admission, although students who only complete the minimum number of units (two) may require higher grades.

==Mathematics prerequisite==

Applicants are required to have successfully completed VCE units 3 and 4, with a study score of at least 25 in mathematics (any), or their interstate/overseas equivalents, for admission to these courses.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 25 in mathematics (any).

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
  • A score of at least 4 in mathematics SL or 4 in further mathematics SL or 4 in mathematical studies SL or 3 in mathematics HL.

Enrolment obligation

BANKING AND FINANCE

Finance is often defined simply as the management of money. This can relate to the finances of individuals and families, of businesses, and of governments. It can include consideration of investment risks. Retail, investment and other banks offer financial services which are designed to assist with money management, making them an important part of a financial system.
