The Faculty of Information Technology offers a PhD program by research in each of the academic units of the faculty, across five of the university's campuses. The degree is awarded for a thesis which, in the opinion of the examiners, makes a significant contribution to knowledge or understanding of any field of study with which the university is directly concerned. The award of the degree is generally accepted as showing that the candidate is capable of carrying out independent research.

IT research has a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus and multi-national approach, providing Monash with a unique capacity to reach out further and deeper than any other institution in Australia. Our five Research Centres which provide the focus for out internationally recognised research strengths in intelligent systems, distributed systems and software engineering, organisational and social informatics, business intelligence and multimedia computing, are the hubs of the research networks.
The length of the thesis may vary across disciplines, but should not normally exceed 100,000 words.
The course is administered by the Monash Institute of Graduate Research.
The course is designed to be taken over a period of three years with a maximum of four years full-time study. Part-time studies are available on conditions approved by the Research Graduate School Committee.
Applications for PhD candidature can be made at any time of the year and application forms are available from the Faculty offices. Prior to applying, prospective candidates should contact the relevant schools to explore possible research topics and to find prospective supervisors.
In appropriate circumstances, enrolment for a masters degree by research my be converted into enrolment for a PhD.

The minimum qualifications for admission to PhD candidature are: (a) a bachelors degree requiring at least four years of full-time study and normally including a research component in the fourth year, leading to an honours degree at first or upper second class level (HI or HIIA); or (b) a course leading to a masters preliminary qualification at a level rated by the relevant school and faculty as equivalent to a first or upper second class honours degree; or (c) a masters degree that comprises a significant research component, at least equivalent to (a) above.

An overall band score of not less than 6.5 on the IELTS test conducted by IDP and the British Council. In addition, a score of at least 6.0 is required for each band score and applicants must undertake the academic module in regard to reading and writing; TOEFL, a minimum total score of 577 together with a score of 5 or more on the TOEFL Test of Written English (TWE)(paper based score); or an Internet-based TOEFL score of 91 with 25 in Writing and no section lower than 20.
