Master of Bioethics for 2009

Course overview

This course provides an interdisciplinary education that is concerned with the ethical issues raised by medicine and the biomedical sciences. It is suitable for health care professionals, teachers in the health care field and those with a general interest in the area. Studies cover questions of life and death, ethical issues in patient care, legal issues in bioethics and ethical issues in professional life. Students who have completed at least one semester of the course are eligible to apply for an annual fellowship of $7000 to work during the Australian summer as an intern in the human genetics program at the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

Minimum entrance requirements

A bachelors degree with honours or equivalent (with at least a credit average in the final year in: medicine or any other health science; law; the biological or social sciences; or in a branch of the humanities; such as philosophy); or a bachelors degree or equivalent (with at least a credit average in the final year in any of the fields referred to above, plus three-years documented relevant practical experience).

International entry requirements

Candidates must have either (a)a degree with at least a credit average in the final year , in medicine or any other health science; in law; the biological or social sciences; or in a branch of the humanities such as philosophy, (or other degree as approved by the faculty board, requiring the equilvalent of not less than four years full-time study in an approved tertiary institution) or (b) a degree gained with at least a credit average in the final year of the course in any of the fields referred to in (a) requiring the equivalent of not less than three years full-time study in an approved tertiary institution plus not less than three years of documented relevant practical experience at a senior level in a healthcare field where ethical problems were a component of the duties undertaken; or (c) qualifications and experience which in the opinion of the faculty board are a suitable preparation for the candidate's proposed field of study. Please note English proficiency requirements must be met.

IELTS 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0; TOEFL 577 with a TWE of 5; or a computer-based TOEFL 233 with an Essay Rating (ER) of 5
