Bachelor of Science for 2009

Course overview

The degree aims to provide students with a grounding across the major disciplines of science as well as in-depth training in at least one specialised area.

Students complete at least one major sequence and at least one minor sequence in specialised areas of study. In addition to the major sequences, students study core and interdisciplinary units.

The science areas of study available at the Clayton campus in first year are astronomy, atmospheric science, biology, chemistry, computer science, geoscience, geography, mathematics, physics, psychology and statistics. Second and third year areas of study are presented in four broad categories:

Earth sciences; Life sciences; Mathematical and computational sciences; and Physical sciences.

The areas of study available at Gippsland campus or by off-campus learning are applied biochemistry, applied microbiology, applied chemistry, applied statistics (minor only), computing, human physiology (minor only), mathematical sciences, resource and environmental management, and psychology.

Career outlook

Graduates from the Bachelor of Science will have skills necessary for employment in a range of scientific and non-scientific fields including; health and pharmaceutical science, banking and finance, environmental consulting, wine and food industries and research. Opportunities exist in organisations including state and local government, local and global research and development corporations, education and the health sector.

Certified chemist status with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (students who complete a major in chemistry are eligible)
