Career opportunities

This course enhances research readiness as well as other medical qualifications and students usually undertake this course after two years of the Monash Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, and resume their medical studies after completing the 12-month degree.

Why study Honours degree of Bachelor of Medical Science?

This course provides students who have successfully completed the equivalent of at least the first two years of undergraduate study in a recognised medicine course with an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of an aspect of medical science and to pursue the study of this field through research.

This course is normally awarded at Honours level only.

Minimum entrance requirements

Students must have successfully completed:

  • two or more years of the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Monash University
  • one or more years of the graduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University
  • two or more years of a medicine/surgery course from another institution deemed by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences as equivalent.

Students wishing to undertake the BMedSc(hons) (Global Health) must have successfully completed at least three years of the Monash MBBS.

Students enrolled in or graduated from a Monash University, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree may apply to undertake this course, as specified above.

The Honours Degree of Bachelor of Medical Science (Global Health)

Students must have successfully completed three or more years of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University.

International entry requirements

2013 international qualification entry requirements and scores for this course are available from the Undergraduate Qualifications Database.

This course stream is only available to international students currently enrolled in a recognized medical program who have completed study which is the equivalent of 2 years of the Monash undergraduate MBBS program in a medicine program with equivalent curriculum content, learning outcome and academic standards as determined by the faculty. In addition, the overall performance of applicants in their medical course is considered. Candidates should have strong academic results with the equivalent of a credit grade average. Candidates with a lower grade average may be given approval, under special circumstances, for admission by the selection committee.

English requirements for international students

Gaining the required result in one of the following tests of English language:

IELTS score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5.

a TOEFL minimum test score of either;

in the written TOEFL, 600 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0; or

in the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 100 with at least 24 in the written section and no less than 20 in any other section.
