You initially work as a doctor within the hospital system and can undertake further speciality training in a range or areas - general practitioner, obstetrics, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery.

The course is accredited by the Australian Medical Council. After successfully completing the medical degree, you become eligible for provisional registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the Medical Board of Australia.

After serving a compulsory internship year of residence in an approved hospital, you become eligible for final registration in Victoria and other states of Australia.

Clinical practice guides our research, which might convince you to pursue a research career - the course offers plenty of opportunity for that - or to become a specialist practitioner. The course exposes you to a huge range of opportunities.

Our course includes interdisciplinary units that introduce the basic medical and behavioural sciences of anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology.

The course is organised around four broad, integrated themes:

Personal and professional development gives you skills in communication, information technology, medical informatics and computing, ethics and the law, and clinical effectiveness.

Population, society, health and illness, which considers the social, environmental and behavioural backgrounds of illness and practice, especially in rural and remote areas.

Scientific basis of clinical practice, including blocks of units that are a mix of basic medical science, case-based presentations and small-group discussions.

Clinical skills, which you'll develop in a range of settings, including hospitals and ambulatory clinics.

International students should note that you cannot apply for the Extended Rural Cohort (ERC). A system error, to be fixed shortly, includes location details for 'Bendigo, full time' under 'Attendance Type for International students'. Bendigo is a rural city, unavailable to you.

The course's first two years are largely campus-based, with some city and rural clinical placements possible. Years three to five are conducted in clinical settings, generally in hospitals and practices across metropolitan and rural Victoria. Year five offers the chance for elective and selective studies.

You can interrupt your studies after second year to undertake the honours degree of Bachelor of Medical Science, and focus on medical research.

Places will not be offered to non-school applicants in the MBBS course. Non-school leaver applicants should consider investigating the Monash University graduate medical program at the Gippsland campus.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 35 in English (ESL) or 30 in any other English and a study score of at least 30 in chemistry.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

A score of at least 5 in English SL or 4 in English HL or 6 in English B SL or 5 in English B HL, and

A score of at least 5 in chemistry SL or 4 in chemistry HL.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Immunisation: Students must satisfy the immunisation requirements in order to participate in placements that are compulsory course requirements.

Monash University is required to inform placement organisations of the immunisation status of all students. If a student does not satisfy the placement organisation's immunisation requirements, it may refuse to accept the student for a placement. A student who is unable to complete all compulsory placements cannot meet the requirements for successful completion of the course Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Students will also be asked to obtain a National Police Certificate (annual requirement) and a Working With Children check on enrolment in the program. It is highly recommended that students hold or attain by the end of first semester, a current registered Level 2 or Senior First Aid Certificate.

A preference for Medicine/Surgery must appear in the initial VTAC application for applicants to be eligible for consideration. Applicants must notify the Faculty Office of changes to their address or telephone details. Only applicants who have listed a preference with VTAC for Medicine/Surgery by the late closing date will be eligible. All interviews will be scheduled and most are completed before the change of preference date.

Gaining the required result in one of the following tests of English language:

IELTS score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5.

A TOEFL minimum test score of either;

in the written TOEFL, 600 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5; or

in the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 100 with at least 24 in the written section and no less than 20 in any other section.

Enrolment obligation
