Course overview

The degree aims to provide professional education for the practice of social work. The course covers social-work principles and methods of intervention relating to individuals, families, groups and communities. It includes social-work research, human development, health and mental health, social policy and management. Fieldwork is interwoven with class work during the course. The course is undertaken full-time over two years. Entry is at third-year level, and applicants must have completed two years of another undergraduate degree, with prerequisites in studies of the individual and studies of society and a unit of Australian Indigenous studies.

Career outlook

Social work is one of the fastest growing areas of professional employment in fields such as health, mental health, education, and child and family welfare. Graduates work in government and non-government agencies, schools, correctional institutions, health agencies, hospitals, community health centres, mental health services, palliative care programs, multicultural agencies, neighbourhood houses and refugees.

Minimum entrance requirements

Two full years of an Arts degree or equivalent, including two units in studies of the individual and studies of society.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE

TAFE graduates who have no other qualifications are not accepted into the Bachelor of Social Work. It is suggested that such applicants consider applying for the Bachelor of Arts degree (refer to the entry in this booklet) or for the Bachelor of Arts/Social Work.

University

Applicants need to have completed the equivalent of two years of an undergraduate degree, with units completed in studies of individual behaviour (such as psychology and behavioural studies) and of aspects of how society functions (such as sociology, anthropology, criminology, philosophy, political science). A unit of Australian Indigenous studies is required. Relevant work experience is also required.
