Career opportunities

Social work is one of the fastest growing areas of employment in the fields of health, mental health, education, and child and family welfare. Social workers are able to work in clinical or practice settings, in policy writing, program evaluation and development and research.

Graduates work in a broad variety of areas - for government and community agencies - in schools, correctional institutions, hospitals, community health centres, mental health services, drug and alcohol programs, family and children's services, multicultural agencies, housing services and with refugees.

Monash students have an excellent record in gaining employment after graduation.

Why study Bachelor of Social Work?

Social workers promote positive development for individuals, families, communities and society. In particular, social work focuses on improving the lives of people who are disadvantaged in our society.

The Monash courses offer subjects in the theory and practice of social work with individuals, families and communities as well as fieldwork skills. They also cover subjects in management, research and policy; all subjects are taught to encourage critical and reflective practice.

Two full years of an undergraduate degree, including one unit in studies of the individual and one unit in studies of society

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE

TAFE graduates who have no other qualifications are not accepted into the Bachelor of Social Work. It is suggested that such applicants consider applying for the Bachelor of Arts degree (refer to the entry in this booklet) or for the Bachelor of Arts/Social Work.

University

Applicants need to have completed the equivalent of two years of an undergraduate degree, with units completed in studies of individual behaviour (such as psychology and behavioural studies) and of aspects of how society functions (such as sociology, anthropology, criminology, philosophy, political science). A unit of Australian Indigenous studies is required. Relevant work experience is also required.

Students must have undertaken two units in studies of the individual (for example, units in psychology, behavioural neuroscience or personality) and in studies of society (for example, units in sociology, politics, anthropology). Some study of Australian Indigenous studies is preferred.

Gaining the required result in one of the following tests of English language:

IELTS score of 7.0 with no individual band score less than 6.5.

a TOEFL minimum test score of either;

in the written TOEFL, 600 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0; or

in the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 100 with at least 24 in the written section and no less than 20 in any other section.

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.
