  1. What are Licence Fees?

Licence Fees are similar to rent and represent the monies owing for each semester that students stay in on campus accommodation.

Top^

  1. What do the Licence Fees cover, do they include breaks and holiday periods?

Licence Fees cover 17 weeks per semester, which includes:

  • 13 weeks of classes
  • 1 non teaching week
  • 3 weeks of examinations

Students can arrange to stay for some periods outside this 17 week semester for an additional charge, for example the 3 week mid semester break or the summer vacation. Arrangements for this can be made during semester.
Students signing on for a full year have 37 weeks guaranteed accommodation, which includes the mid-year vacation period.

  1. Does the cost of the Licence Fees include utilities?

Licence Fees cover gas, water and electricity. Phone calls and internet usage are an additional charge.

  1. What happens if I accept my room on-campus and then decide to live off-campus? Can I move in and then decide?

NO! Many Students miss out on a room each semester and then have to search for alternative accommodation. In securing accommodation off-campus they are required to sign a tenancy or licence agreement, usually for a 12-month period. In this case, even if a room becomes available as a result of you leaving, it is unlikely that they will be able to fill the vacancy. It would cost too much money to the potential resident to break their existing agreement with their off-campus accommodation provider. You should also be aware that once you sign the Licence Agreement, you are bound by the terms and conditions of the agreement. If you do vacate before the specified date on your agreement, you will incur financial penalties.

  1. What do I need to bring?

Students will need to provide their own cutlery and crockery, food and linen (sheets and pillowcase). The Gippsland Residential Office provides linen for International students for the initial settling in period of 1-2 weeks, after which time it would be expected that students purchase their own.

  1. Who will I be living with? Can I choose?

Students are not normally able to choose who they live with. Unit allocations are determined by Gippsland Residential. The students in each unit will be a mix of Returning and New Students, Males and Females, and International and Australian Students. If students have a preference, for example to live in an all Female unit or with someone they know, this should be specified on the application form. Student preferences will be taken into consideration when staff are allocating rooms, although we can make no guarantees.

  1. What about any other special needs that I may have?

All special needs should be clearly indicated on the application form.

  1. Who can I talk to if I am having trouble with the people I am living with?

We have a team of Residential Advisors (RAs) to provide support and assistance on a broad range of personal and academic issues for all students in residence. Each Residential Adviser is a senior student who has not only demonstrated a commitment to his/her fellow students and displayed a genuine concern to help others, but also received formal training in leadership, conflict resolution, communication skills and first aid.
College Heads are also available to assist residents, no matter what the hour. There are 2 College Heads and a Deputy College Head who together with the security staff form the after hours response team. They are available to offer after hour's assistance and support when necessary and in most instances are happy to assist.
If residents are still having problems then they should make an appointment to speak with the Manager, Gippsland Residential group during office hours.

  1. Would I be able to apply for a change of room/unit, if I am not happy with the one I was allocated?

It is policy that the accommodation offered to each student is for the full academic year. It is also policy that the Gippsland Residential office does not expect to change the unit or room allocated to a student. However, if requested room changes can be accommodated, however a feel will be charged. If a particular student is having major difficulties, then they will need to make an appointment with their College Head to discuss the issue.

  1. Will I be staying in the same accommodation during Orientation as I will during the Semester?
