Richardson Hall
Richardson Hall took its first residents in September 1972 and opened at full capacity for the academic year 1973. The Hall is named after the author, Henry Handel Richardson, the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindsay Richardson. Richardson is designed around 9 stairways, each accommodating a community of approximately 20 residents. The stairways are divided into 5 or 6 levels each with 4 to 6 rooms sharing a bathroom and a utility room. This arrangement offers privacy and relaxed social contact amongst relatively small groups in addition to the communal common areas including a computer room, quiet study area, small TV room, exercise room and a music room. Newspapers are delivered directly to the Hall every morning, so residents can sit quietly and read the paper whilst having a coffee or waiting for their washing to finish. Residents of the Hall run a kiosk every evening. The larger common areas including a large screen TV projector room, a games room, disco area together with the garden and barbecue area, provides space for larger groups and functions. Kitchen facilities are large and clean and are available for residents to prepare their own meals if they wish, alternatively residents may wish to purchase a 'ready-made' meal at the MESS Hall Dining Room and Café on site. The MESS Hall provides lunch, dinner and Café nights at a very reasonable cost. Richardson Hall has a separate common room, TV room and kitchen facilities for higher year students (Postgraduates and mature age students 20+) which complement and support a quiet and hard working atmosphere but still allows residents to take a full and active part in the life of the Hall. The Hall has a pleasant outlook over a lake and the University grounds with a large variety of bird life. Richardson Hall and the other Halls are close to the facilities and faculties of the University, in particular the gymnasium and swimming pools. The ethos of the Hall is to provide a balanced living environment, allowing for academic and social pursuits, and personal development. Richardson residents represent a wide range of nationalities. Whilst the majority of residents are from country Victoria and interstate, the overall population of Richardson is made up of students from over twenty countries. This provides a rich and diverse culture full of great opportunities to learn about other cultures and make friends from all over the world. The Hall is strongly committed to providing a supportive, caring community environment, providing social, intellectual, and sporting activities to complement your studies at Monash.
