Farrer Hall
Second of the Halls to be built, Farrer's initial intake was in May 1965. The Hall took its name from William Farrer (1845-1906), who pioneered the breeding of introduced strains of wheat to suit Australian conditions. It comprises two separate three-storey buildings, 'Commons' and 'Lords', containing a main common room, several kitchens open to use by individuals or small groups, study centre, computer centre, library, poolroom, music and TV rooms, a thriving shop and a secure bicycle enclosure. Each floor of each building, along with bathroom and laundry has a small lounge, with facilities for self-catering and a floor telephone. In 'Commons' one room and a bathroom have been modified for the use, when required, for residents with physical disabilities. Most of Farrer's features and activities - shop, computer room, entertainment and so on - are coordinated by a number of committees made up of Resident Advisors and students. In the general life of the Hall, especially the social life, a leading role is played by the elected executive committee of the Farrer Hall Society, of which all residents are members. There is also a Floor Representatives' group comprising one student from each floor and this group meets approximately twice a semester with the College Head and Deputy College Head to discuss the needs of students in the Hall. The Residential Support Team, selected for their personal qualities and leadership skills, are normally graduate students of the university, though sometimes university staff or senior undergraduates are appointed. They play an important social, administrative and advisory role in the Hall. Farrer residents, senior and junior, represent a wide range of nationalities. While the largest single category are country students from Victoria and elsewhere in Australia, the total membership in a typical year might come from twenty or more countries. The Hall is strongly committed to maintaining its relaxed atmosphere, in which social, intellectual and sporting pursuits complement the academic, and in which the benefits of tertiary study and community living are enhanced by being shared with friends and colleagues from different cultural backgrounds.
