Canadian Student Visas (Study Permits)
Exchange students who are planning to be in Canada for less than 6 months (from your date of arrival) do not need a student visa (called a study permit in Canada). Exchange students who are Australian citizens and will be in Canada less than 6 months can enter Canada as visitors without obtaining a visa in advance. If you are not an Australian citizen you should check the link above to see whether you need to apply for a Temporary Residence Visa before you leave Australia.
However exchange students who enter Canada as visitors will not be able to work.
If you want to work during your exchange you should apply for a study permit before you leave Australia regardless of how long you will be in Canada (see the link above). This will allow you to work only in on-campus jobs at your host university. You have to be in Canada on a study permit for at least 12 months before your visa will allow off-campus work.
Coop courses (work placements) are offered by most Canadian universities but are not open to exchange students.

For Writing designated courses, students are required to have achieved a C- in a university level English course or 75% in a high school English course. For Quantitative designated courses students are required to have achieved a C- in a university level maths, statistics or economics course. Exchange students may be asked to provide university or high school transcripts to prove they have met these additional pre-requisites.
