How do you apply for an exchange to South Africa?

Studying in South Africa will be one of the greatest experiences of your time at Monash, but it's still a big decision to make. Monash Abroad and your faculty exchange advisers are able to help you through the application process.

1. Decide you want to apply

• Read the how to apply for an intercampus exchange page and download the intercampus exchange application form that explains the process in detail.
• Do your sums on finances, time and leaving things behind (like where you live and work... and family!)
• Find out about the Monash South Africa campus and Johannesburg.

2. Get an approved study plan

• Do your own research on available units at Monash South Africa – you could include approved electives from other faculties but you need a full-time study load (24 credit points)
• Seek advice from Monash Abroad or your faculty exchange adviser
• Get your study plan approved by your faculty – it can take several weeks.

3. Submit your application

• Obtain two references to support your application from tutors or lecturers
• Do your financial plan (which is part of the application form)
• Lodge your application with Monash Abroad by the deadline for the semester you want to go

4. Assessment, interview and approval

• Your application is assessed by Monash Abroad
• Approval is not just about your academic progress but ensuring you will cope with studying and living overseas – so we arrange an interview

5. Pack the bags!

• Make sure you have a valid passport (plus one year beyond what you need)
• The (small) cost of living in South Africa
