Fee-paying study abroad

If none of the programs organised by Monash meet your needs you can choose to organise your own study abroad program.

If you want to study for one or two semesters at an overseas university with which Monash does not have a formal exchange agreement, you can do so as a fee-paying study abroad student.

This means you will pay the full international tuition fees to the overseas university, but unlike other programs, you will not pay your Monash tuition fees for the period you are away.

You will not receive a degree from the overseas university but you can apply to receive credit towards your Monash degree.

Where can I go?

The possibilities are limitless, but remember that Monash has well over a hundred formal exchange partners around the world and it is far easier to apply to go to one of these because Monash Abroad will do a lot of the work for you.  You should exhaust this list first before you consider going to a non-partner university.

Eligibility requirements

The Monash eligibility requirements are the same as for the exchange program.  You will also have to meet the entry requirements of the overseas university for which you apply.

Financial assistance

You will be eligible for the same Monash travel grant as exchange students, provided you meet those eligibility criteria.

Volunteering

From 2010 students doing semester length programs including study abroad are encouraged to undertake volunteer work.

How do I apply?

You must follow the same application process and use the same application form as for the exchange program to ensure that you receive credit for your overseas study and you receive the appropriate travel grant.

You will also need to apply directly to the overseas university by obtaining the application materials directly from the university you wish to go to and meeting their application deadlines. Monash Abroad will assist you when we can but, as you will be applying to a non-partner university we are unlikely to have any information about the overseas university.  Once you have been accepted at the overseas university you must provide Monash Abroad with a copy of your acceptance.

What is the deadline?

You must submit your Monash Abroad application, approved by your faculty and accompanied by your letter of acceptance from the overseas university, to Monash Abroad at least 6 weeks before your overseas study commences.

You must also meet all deadlines set by your overseas host university.

Credit for study abroad programs

To receive credit you must obtain faculty approval for your proposed overseas study in advance by submitting the Monash Abroad application form to your faculty exchange adviser.  As you will be applying to go to a non-partner university you should submit detailed unit outlines for all the units you want to study overseas.  As soon as your faculty has approved your overseas study plan you should submit the completed form, with attachments, to the Monash Abroad office.
