International exchange program
With more than 100 exchange partner universities in 26 different countries, there are many opportunities to spend one or two semesters overseas as part of your Monash degree.
Where can I go on exchange?
Refer to the Partner universities webpage for more information about where you can go on exchange.
Entry requirements
To be eligible for the exchange program you must have:
- completed at least 48 credit points of your course at Monash (except Engineering and Law)
- Engineering students must complete 96 credit points (less for intercampus exchanges between Monash Australia and Malaysia)
- Law students (single or double degree) must complete 72 credit points in total which must include 48 credit points of compulsory or quasi compulsory units from the Bachelor of Laws. These 48 credit points of Law units can be completed at Monash or been given specified credit from another institution
- an active enrolment in a Monash undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at any campus in Australia, Malaysia or South Africa
- a credit average (60%) in the results so far in your current course
- complied with any additional requirements of your faculty and had your overseas study plan approved by your faculty
- applied for a country other then your country of citizenship
- selected a full time load of on-campus units at the overseas university
- been assessed by a process of consultation with Monash Abroad and faculty staff as a suitable representative of Monash University
Other factors which are taken into account include:
- The number of exchange places available at the host university. In the unlikely event that no places are available you will be given the opportunity to apply for another university.
- Students enrolled in Bachelor of Medicine, Nursing or Pharmacy degrees cannot currently go overseas on exchange due to professional registration requirements, although they can do clinical placements overseas and there are limited opportunities for Medicine and Pharmacy students to do intercampus exchanges between the Sunway campus in Malaysia and Australia (in both directions).
- Some faculties may not permit you to undertake overseas study during the final semester of your course - check with your faculty exchange adviser before applying.
- International students must enrol in the equivalent of 24 Monash credit points while overseas in order to complete their Monash courses within the time specified in their Australian student visas.
- Monash students at the campuses in Malaysia and South Africa can participate in exchanges to third countries (eg to Sweden or the USA ) provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
- Monash part time and distance education students can participate in the exchange progam but must study full time on campus while overseas.
The Monash Abroad office selects students to go on the exchange program.
Volunteering
From 2010 students who do semester length programs including exchanges are encouraged to undertake volunteer work.
Exchange program and my degree
While you are overseas on the exchange program you will:
- remain enrolled at Monash and receive credit for your overseas study towards your Monash degree.
- pay your normal fees (HECS, Student Contribution Amount or International Student Course Fees) at Monash but no additional tuition fees overseas.

"I found potential employers very willing to discuss my experiences gained whilst overseas on exchange. With so many global organisations, companies are always looking for people who can demonstrate that they can survive in this wide world. It gives you, and your CV, a great advantage...trust me!"
