Postcard to Monash from Canada

Greetings from Vancouver, Canada.

I'm studying at the Business School at Simon Fraser University as part of the Monash Abroad exchange program.

The subjects I take here go towards my Bachelor of Business (Marketing)/Bachelor of Business (Management) double degree back home at Monash's Caulfield campus.

Simon Fraser University is situated on picturesque Burnaby Mountain, so I'm surrounded by snowcapped peaks while also having a view of downtown Vancouver and the sea.

This year, I spent Australia Day skiing on the slopes of Whistler Mountain -- quite different to the typical Aussie beachside BBQ.

I've been able to travel through the Rocky Mountains to Calgary and spot orcas (black-and-white, toothed whales) in Victoria, British Columbia's capital. Vancouver is close to the United States so I've also been to Las Vegas, Seattle and Lake Tahoe and seen the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

You have to make the most of your time studying abroad -- the calendar becomes your enemy -- so you find yourself doing things you wouldn't do back home.

I recommend all students go on an exchange program to experience life in another part of the world. Don't be nervous about taking the plunge -- and remember to take your camera.

I'm looking forward to returning to Monash to complete my degree and am aiming to get a job in strategic marketing, but for the moment life in the Northern Hemisphere is truly fantastic.
