Monash Abroad travel grants

Most students who are accepted on an Exchange Program receive a Monash Abroad travel grant

All Monash abroad travel grants and other financial support are subject to change. Grants set in previous semesters and years should only be used as a guide to future Monash Abroad grants. As part of your application process we encourage you to stay in regular communication with your Coordinator and regularly check the Monash abroad website. This information is correct at the time of publication.

Students from Australian and South African campuses will receive one travel grant whether they go on exchange for one or two consecutive semesters.

There are a few key exchange partners which attract a higher travel grant. Students who undertake an exchange at one of these partners will be eligible for a travel grant of A$2,100.

Students from the Malaysian campuses will receive an additional grant of RM10,000 per semester for exchanges. (TBC)

Students studying at another international Monash campus receive a different scale of travel grants for intercampus exchange students.

Exceptions

A small number of students who go on exchange are not eligible for Monash Abroad travel grants, usually because they are receiving other financial assistance.   The exceptions include:

  • Students who receive other significant financial assistance for their exchange from Monash University or external organisations . These will be assessed on a case by case basis.
  • Students who are awarded  UMAP or Cheung Kong grants (usually valued at $5,500).
  • Students who are awarded Japanese Government (JASSO), German Government (DAAD) or Free University Berlin scholarships.
  • Students who are citizens of the country to which they are going.  (They will not normally be accepted to participate in the exchange program.)
  • Students who do two consecutive overseas programs will receive one travel grant at the higher applicable rate eg a student who does a short term program at Prato followed by a one semester exchange at a German university will receive a grant of $1,500.

Students who receive OS-HELP loansMonash Travel Equity scholarships, Monash student loans or Centrelink payments are still eligible for the normal Monash Abroad travel grant.

Payment of grants

Once your grant is approved we will pay it into your Australian bank account, usually about 4 weeks before your overseas program commences. If you are studying at the Malaysia or South Africa campus, Monash Abroad or your home campus will arrange payment into your local bank account.
