Monash Oxfam South Africa Internship Program

Applications have now closed for the 2010 Oxfam internship program.

The program and partnership

  • Monash University and Oxfam Australia have partnered to provide internship opportunities working for local community-based organisations in South Africa
  • Each intern will spend approximately six weeks in South Africa (one week induction, four weeks placement, one week debrief and travel)
  • Placement organisations support some of the country's most vulnerable people and are also responding to the devastating impact of HIV and AIDS
  • The varied and challenging work will provide you with deeper understanding of issues related to community development and build invaluable skills and knowledge for ongoing study and/or future careers
  • Monash covers all basic living and travel costs, including return flights to Johannesburg, return flights between Johannesburg and Durban, accommodation and local transfer transport costs as well as travel and medical insurance

Internships in 2010

  • Required internship period in South Africa is 11 January - 22 February
  • Up to 14 internship placements available in 2010 (Two students placed with each partner organisation)
  • Internships based in or in the vicinity of Durban or Pietermaritzburg in South Africa

What to expect

The environment in which Oxfam and its partner organisations operate in South Africa can change very quickly. Two of the key qualities required for a successful internship experience such as this are adaptability and resilience.

  • Partner organisations may have to pull out of the internship program at short notice
  • You may have to placed with another partner organisation as a result
  • While immensely rewarding, the nature of the work will at times require both maturity and strength to be able to cope

Eligibility

  • You must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at Monash
  • You have a current passport (with at least 30 days validity after planned return date) and all required vaccinations (at your expense)
  • At the time of departure, you must have successfully completed at least two years of full-time study (or part-time equivalent) in your bachelor degree and will continue to be an enrolled student after the internship
  • You must be studying a course deemed a required background criteria by the host organisation in South Africa, which can include law, health science, nursing, social work, sociology, social and community welfare, arts (especially geography and environmental science), education, or a related field
  • Monash South Africa students must have participated in the Student Volunteer Program in 2009

Law students

  • The Castan Centre for Human Rights Law manages applications for Oxfam internships which require a background in law. Applications for the Oxfam internships for law students have now closed.

About the partner organisations

  • In South Africa, Oxfam Australia work with around 40 partner organisations in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces to support some of the country's most vulnerable people and respond to the devastating impact of HIV and AIDS.
  • These organisations are working to ensure people have enough food for an active and healthy life, promoting gender equality and providing care and support, and addressing the needs of orphans and vulnerable children

Childline

  • Childline provides services to vulnerable and abused children and their families in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal both face-to-face and through a Child-helpline

The Gay and Lesbian Network

  • The Gay and Lesbian Network is based in KwaZulu-Natal and builds on existing work with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community with a focus on the creation of an enabling environment for HIV and AIDS interventions

Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust

  • The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust offers a holistic program of care and prevention for people affected and infected by HIV and AIDS in the outer west region of Durban

Justice and Women

  • Justice and Women educate the Melmoth community (a rural community in KwaZulu Natal) and traditional leaders about women and children's rights, working to facilitate the empowerment of marginalised communities, especially women, to enable them to participate fully in society

Refugee Social Services

  • Provides support to the large refugee/asylum-seeker population in Durban and KawZulu-Natal, particularly by promoting protection, social integration and self-reliance of the refugee community

Woza Moya

  • Woza Moya is an Oxfam partner within the Ufafa community, situated about 15kms from the town of Ixopo in KwaZulu Natal. The Woza Moya project focuses primarily on HIV prevention, healthcare and poverty alleviation.
