Early Career Fellowships offered by the NHMRC include Australian and Overseas Training Fellowships

The purpose of the NHMRC Early Career Fellowships is to enable developing health and medical researchers of outstanding ability to undertake advanced training, either in Australia or overseas, in health and medical research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health.

Categories of Award

Full-time Overseas Based Fellowships

  • CJ Martin Biomedical Fellowship
  • Neil Hamilton Fairley Clinical Fellowship
  • Sidney Sax Public Health Fellowship
  • INSERM Exchange Fellowship
  • Fellowship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research
  • Australia-China Exchange

Fellowships are offered in each of these categories for research training where the initial two years is undertaken at an overseas institution followed by two years in Australia.

Full time Australian Based Fellowships

  • Peter Doherty Biomedical Fellowship
  • Clinical Research Fellowship
  • Public Health Fellowship
  • Primary Health Care Fellowship
  • Fellowship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research

Fellowships are offered in each of these categories for research training to be based entirely in Australia.

Part-time Fellowships

Part-time Fellowships are also available. These are:

  • Health Professional Research Fellowship
  • Australian Research Fellowship Part-time.

Early Career Fellowships Co-Funding Partners

The following partners are offering Early Career Fellowships:

  • Cerebral Palsy Foundation/ NHMRC Early Career Fellowship
  • Department of Health and Ageing: Hearing Loss Prevention Program (HLPP)/NHMRC Early Career Fellowship
  • MSRA/ NHMRC Betty Cuthbert Fellowship
  • National Heart Foundation of Australia Early Career Fellowship/ NHMRC Fellowship; and
  • R. G. Menzies/ NHMRC Fellowship - this fellowship provides funds in addition to those from the NHMRC, for Overseas Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowship applicants who indicate an interest in the R. G. Menzies Fellowship.
