Career Development Fellowships

Career Development Fellowships are open to all researchers in Australia who have a sustained track record of significant output as demonstrated in peer-reviewed literature, and a strong commitment to quality research outputs as judged relative to opportunity.

Applicants for any of the Career Development Fellowships below may also apply for a partnership award.

  • R D Wright Biomedical Career Development Fellowships
  • Clinical Career Development Fellowships
  • Population Health Career Development Fellowships
  • Industry Career Development Fellowships
  • Cofunded Career Development Fellowships

Partnership Career Development Fellowships

These are specially targeted Fellowships developed in partnership with another health and medical research organisation. Both the NHMRC and another partner will provide funding for the award.

  1. Cerebral Palsy Foundation/NHMRC CDF
  2. Diabetes Australia/NHMRC CDF
  3. National Heart Foundation of Australia/NHMRC CDF
  4. SpinalCure Australia/NHMRC CDF

Applicants for the Partnership CDF may nominate more than one partner organisation.

The NHMRC Career Development Fellowship scheme is highly competitive.  Before commencing an application researchers should carefully consider the Position Classification Statements, Research Performance Descriptors and Selection Criteria, (Att 1, Att 2 and Att 3 of the CDF Funding Rules, respectively). 

Eligibility

An applicant must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category Visa. Applicants who have applied for but not yet been granted permanent residency or a Special Category Visa may apply for the award. Evidence of the appropriate status must be provided before the start of the award.

Career Development Fellowship (CDF) Level 1:
Applicants will normally have at least 2 and less than 7 years post-doctoral (as at 31 March of the application year) experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed unless career disruptions or industry placements exist. (refer to part 2 of the Funding Rules, Section 3.7 Career Disruption and Part 1, Section 9.2 Industry Placements).

Career Development Fellowship (CDF) Level 2:

Will normally have more than 7 and less than 12 years post-doctoral (as at 31 March of application year) experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed unless career disruptions or industry placements exist. (refer to part 2 of the Funding Rules, Section 3.7 Career Disruption and Part 1, Section 9.2 Industry Placements)
