Scheme Aim and Objectives

This scheme aims to further develop Australian health and medical researchers early in their career. It will enable investigators to establish themselves as independent, self-directed researchers early in their research career; expand capacity for biomedical, clinical and public health and health service delivery research, and for evidence-based policy development in Australian health systems; and encourage the translation of research outcomes into practice.

Categories of Career Development Awards

Applicants for any of the Career Development Awards below may also apply for a partnership award.

  1. Biomedical Career Development Awards
  2. Clinical Career Development Awards
  3. Population Health Career Development Awards
  4. Industry Career Development Awards

Partnership Career Development Awards

These are specially targeted awards developed in partnership with another health and medical research organisation. Both the NHMRC and another partner will provide funding for the award.

  1. Cerebral Palsy Foundation/NHMRC CDA
  2. Diabetes Australia/NHMRC CDA
  3. National Heart Foundation of Australia/NHMRC CDA
  4. Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia/NHMRC CDA

Applicants for the Partnership CDA can also request consideration under another category of CDA.

Eligibility

An applicant must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or New Zealand citizen holding a Special Category Visa. Applicants who have applied for but not yet been granted permanent residency or a Special Category Visa may apply for the award. Evidence of the appropriate status must be provided before the start of the award.
  1. Career Development Award (CDA) Level 1:
    Have at least 2 and less than 7 years post-doctoral experience unless exceptional circumstances exist (see exceptional circumstances on page 2 of the NHMRC funding policy [ pdf 83kb]). Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (eg a professional doctorate) may also be eligible to apply.

  2. Career Development Award (CDA) Level 2:
    Have more than 7 and less than 12 years post-doctoral experience unless exceptional circumstances exist (see page 2 of the NHMRC funding policy [pdf 83kb]). Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (eg a professional doctorate) may also be eligible to apply.
