Scheme Aim and Objectives

The Australia Fellowship is an award to support the salary and research of outstanding researchers with a vision to expand the scale and scope of Australian health and medical research. Australia Fellows will be conducting innovative research at the highest international levels.

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate world class standards of achievement and the expertise, vision and capacity to lead high performing teams that will produce high quality research outcomes.

Policy Changes

The following details the major policy changes that have been made to the Australia Fellowship scheme for funding commencing in January 2010:

  • Since international and Australian funding calendars may not be synchronised, and to encourage international applicants, the policy relating to international applicants has been adjusted to enable them to apply at any time in the funding year
  • EOI will be accepted from international applicants at any time during the 2009 funding year
  • EOI from international applicants will be peer reviewed by the Australia Fellowship Review Panel (AFRP); and
  • Full applications will then be invited from international applicants deemed to be competitive by the AFRP
  • These full applications may be subject to an accelerated peer review process, however, international applicants will be judged to the same standards as applicants from Australia
  • International applicants are those that hold at least a 50% appointment at a non-Australian institution during the 12 months prior to the submission of their EOI

Selection of applicants for interview will be finalised following the submission of the full application.

Funding

The total package for an Australia Fellowship will be provided as a one-line amount of $800,000 per annum for five years which includes any additional on-costs which may be incurred.
