Exempt Dealings
Is my proposal exempt?
Exempt dealings are dealings that have been assessed over time as posing negligible risk and are outlined in Schedule 2, Part 1 of the Gene Technology Regulations. A summary of Schedule 2, Part one is available here.
Examples include:
- Genetically modified Caenorhabditis elegans (both knockouts and transgenic).
- Dealings involving an Exempt Host/vector system and producing less than 10 Litres of culture.
- Dealings with an animal into which genetically modified somatic cells have been introduced.
- Dealings involving shot gun cloning, or the preparation of a cDNA library in Exempt Host/vector.
Conditions Applicable to Conducting an Exempt Dealing:
- Exempt dealings must be contained within a facility and must not involve release of the organism into the environment.
- The facility does NOT need to be certified by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator.
- Transport of GMOs between various facilities at the University or to other destinations must comply with the Transport guidelines.
