Exempt Dealings

Is my proposal exempt?

Exempt dealings are dealings that have been assessed over time as posing negligible risk and are outlined in Schedule 2, Part 1 of the Gene Technology Regulations.  A summary of Schedule 2, Part one is available here.

Examples include:

  1. Genetically modified Caenorhabditis elegans (both knockouts and transgenic).
  2. Dealings involving an Exempt Host/vector system and producing less than 10 Litres of culture.
  3. Dealings with an animal into which genetically modified somatic cells have been introduced.
  4. Dealings involving shot gun cloning, or the preparation of a cDNA library in Exempt Host/vector.

Conditions Applicable to Conducting an Exempt Dealing:

  1. Exempt dealings must be contained within a facility and must not involve release of the organism into the environment. 
  2. The facility does NOT need to be certified by the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator.
  3. Transport of GMOs between various facilities at the University or to other destinations must comply with the Transport guidelines.

In most circumstances you will have a response about the suitability of your application within 2 weeks from submission.
