Who needs Animal Ethics Committee Approval?

Using Live Animals?

Any person at Monash University who wishes to use animals in research or teaching must first obtain approval from their local Department or School Animal Ethics Committee (AEC). Only after approval from their AEC may the project commence.

Animal is defined in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act as: 

  • Reptile, bird or mammal, other than any human being or;
  • Any reptile, bird or other mammal that is beyond the normal mid-point of gestation or incubation for the particular class of reptile, bird or mammal (Mammalian feti, Bird embryo in an egg; Reptilian pre-hatched young; Marsupial pouch young) or;
  • a live adult decapod crustacean, that is a lobster;a crab; a crayfish or;  
  • A live adult cephalopod including, an octopus; a squid; a cuttlefish ; a nautilus.

Grant requires Ethics Clearances before releasing funds?

Many Granting bodies including NHMRC, ARC, National Heart Foundation do not release funding until they are advised by the Animal Ethics, Research Office that animal ethics clearances have been obtained for the successful grant.

    Killing an animal to obtain organs or tissues requires AEC approval.
