Holding or Using Animals in Laboratories

The following codes and guidelines must be adhered to when laboratory animals are held or used outside designated animal holding areas.

Mandatory Codes

• Code of Practice for the Housing and Care of Laboratory Mice, Rats, Guinea Pigs and Rabbits
  
• Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes

These codes are mandatory under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Regulations and outline minimum standards and promote recommendations for the housing and care of these species.

Monash University Animal Welfare Committee Guidelines

• Monitoring of animals held outside designated animal holding areas
• Daily monitoring of all animals
• Transportation of mice and rats between buildings and laboratories within the campus
• Transporting animals from overseas, interstate and local sources
• Guidelines on Euthanasia
