Writing Grant Applications

Contents | Next: Elements of an Application

Introduction

Foundations and Trusts operate within legal constraints and are guided by the objectives, priorities and wishes of the donor.

In preparing applications, it is important to remember that most granting agencies receive considerably more applications for support than there are funds available for distribution. Consequently, it is essential to submit succinct, clearly articulated and carefully justified proposals. Projects must clearly fit within the priorities of the funding scheme.

Before Framing an Application:

  • Read the current guidelines.
  • Ascertain if the Grantor funds your field of research.
  • Check the eligibility criteria.
  • Know your field intimately, including the field's directions, existing knowledge gaps and research already under way.
  • Ensure you fit all assessment criteria.
