Overview

The time to contribute to and participate in the discovery of new drugs for protozoan parasites is now. Major technology platforms and advances in genetics, biology, chemistry and the pharmaceutical sciences are no longer the exclusive purview of the pharma industry. Indeed, many academic scientists can now reasonably access relevant technology platforms, either within their institutions or through collaborations.

Substantial funding for major collaborative discovery projects has become available through foundations, public private partnerships and government-based programs.

However, necessary advances in technologies and step change improvements in research funding are insufficient criteria to ensure success in drug discovery. Some additional, essential criteria include the 'P words' -- Program, Process and People.

This presentation will highlight how these 'P words' have been essential to the success of an anti-malarial drug discovery project (synthetic peroxide project funded through MMV) that has been undertaken by a multi-disciplinary, international, collaborative project team.
