Overview

Benefit: come and explore how IT has accelerated the social trends without knowledge or planning.

We humans think we plan and act rationally, but in many ways we are like the ants. Just as they create an ant hill without knowledge or planning, so too humans create social trends and patterns of which we are totally unaware. The rapid growth of communication and information technology has accelerated this tendency. Every new technology has unintended side effects, and information technology is no exception. The computer is a kind of serendipity machine, making possible all kinds of new scientific discoveries, but at the same time it is changing society in unexpected ways.
