About Student Internships

Want to improve your organisation’s environmental performance? Could do with an injection of enthusiasm and specific green skills to move your environmental project along?

Student internships are a key part of the Green Steps program and offer organisations the opportunity to kick start a new environmental initiative or accelerate an existing one. Student interns provide a much needed injection of enthusiasm and fresh thinking as well as ‘hands on deck’ to develop and implement an organisation’s environmental programs.

Green Steps interns can:

·       Develop and implement sustainability initiatives within your organisation.

·       Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

·       Recommend opportunities for savings and greater efficiencies.

·       Set your organisation apart.

·       Prepare you for new legislation.

·       Save you money.

·       Provide fresh expertise, energy and creativity.

Host organisations benefit from a specially trained intern with innovative ideas and approaches working on a variety of sustainability projects, whilst students gain invaluable practical experience.  Host organisations typically see at least a 10% savings on their resource use and associated costs.

Common projects include (but are not limited to):

·       Establishing or updating environmental baselines;

·       Developing energy efficiency, carbon reduction or waste minimisation action plans;

·       Implementing staff behaviour change programs.

Past student internships have found students working within not-for-profit organisations, small business, local, state and federal government and large corporations across a range of sectors, from banking to mining and aviation to habitat reclamation.

Green Steps courses are run yearly in most capital cities and internships are available to organisations of all sizes operating in Australia.

Students undertake an internship of a minimum of 12 days (often 1-3 days per week over several weeks) and act as internal change agents in support of various environmental improvement initiatives.

Green Steps interns are supervised and mentored by experienced organisational sustainability practitioners from the Monash Sustainability Institute.

There are costs associated with hosting a Green Steps intern, with different rates available for business, government and not for profits organisations. Please contact us to discuss your organisation’s situation.
