Host an Intern

Green Steps interns offer organisations the opportunity to kick-start a new environmental initiative or accelerate an existing one. As a result of practical training and mentorship within the Green Steps @ Uni program, interns add real value to any organisation. Internship hosts can be not-for-profit organisations, small businesses, local, state and federal governments and large corporations across a range of sectors, from banking to mining and aviation to habitat reclamation.

Background

Green Steps @ Uni is a university program that blends theoretical and practical approaches to improve the capacity of university students to contribute to more sustainable organisations across Australia. A key element of this approach is a practical project within a host organisation. Green Steps' interns are trained by Green Steps trainers who have all worked in professional environmental change positions within companies and organisations. Interns benefit from the experiences, case studies and wisdom of trainers who understand the reality of enacting environmental change within an organisation. As a result of practical training and mentorship, Green Steps' interns add real value to any organisation.

Green Steps interns can:

• Develop and implement sustainability initiatives within your organisation;
• Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle the carbon price;
• Recommend opportunities for savings and greater efficiencies;
• Save you money;
• Prepare you for new legislation;
• Provide fresh expertise, energy and creativity.

Common projects include (but are not limited to):

• Establishing or updating environmental baselines;
• Developing energy efficiency, carbon reduction or waste minimisation action plans;
• Implementing staff behaviour change programs.

Key Details

• Organisations of all types, sizes and sectors across Australia are invited to host an intern;
• Internships are 15 days in duration (often 1 - 3 days per week over several weeks);
• Interns act as internal change agents in support of various environmental improvement initiatives;
• Interns are mentored by sustainability experts from the Monash Sustainability Institute who have real experience in implementing environmental projects;
• There are costs associated with hosting a Green Steps intern, different rates are available for business, government and not-for-profit organisations.
