Overview: The science of injury prevention is well established, yet injury remains the leading cause of death for Australians under the age of 44 years. Motor vehicle crashes alone accounted for 1,601 fatalities in 2006.
The Monash University Accident Research Centre has saved thousands of lives through pioneering research into seat belt usage, vehicle speed limits, toddler drowning and safer consumer products. In an interactive panel discussion to celebrate the Centre's 20th anniversary and Research Month, some of the nation's leading safety experts came together to challenge traditional views on the causes of accidents and injuries.
More than 170 people filled the BMW Edge Theatre in Federation Square to participate in the public forum. ABC 774 radio presenter, Jon Faine, led the expert panel through two unscripted scenarios. Issues covered included: speeding, high-powered cars, teen drivers, motorcycles, road fatalities and injury. Amid a wide-ranging discussion, panel members made it clear that individuals, legislators and companies had a vital role in taking responsibility for injury prevention.
