Technology alone will not save us
Associate Professor Damon Honnery believes it takes a technologist to critique the limitations of technology in the context of climate change. As a distinguished research engineer, Damon has spent more than 20 years at the forefront of energy technologies, but as an author and a scientist he warns us that technology alone will not prevent the worst consequences of human impact on the environment.
Damon conducts research in the field of energy along a continuum that extends from the fundamental science of how fuels (and alternative fuels) evaporate and burn, through to the social issues that drive demand for the use of fossil fuels. It is a philosophy that demands Damon is always aware of the broader context and connections of each project he undertakes.
"If you want to solve problems like pollution and environmental issues that occur directly as a consequence of technology, you have to look at the full gamut," Damon says.
"If you take what is known as an Earth systems science approach, the starting point is that everything is integrated at some level. So you can't focus on one aspect in isolation. If you are interested in solving the dilemmas around energy use and pollutant formation, you have to actually work from the production of the fuels, to the use of the fuels, right through to the derived demand for all of that, and this ultimately brings you to human beings. You've got to be conscious of all that – it’s a continuum of effort."
Damon does not claim to work in all areas of the energy field, or to be making advances in all of them. Rather, he always sees the broader potential in his work.
For example, he is currently working in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation on using alternative fuels to operate small gas turbines. While the thrust of the project lies outside his personal environmental concerns, he is confident the advances achieved could be applied elsewhere.
Similarly, his current ARC Linkage grant-funded partnership with a major mining company and a component supplier to produce electric-powered underground mining vehicles also has potential knock-on benefits above ground.
The mining project demonstrates the power technology still posses to improve the welfare of humans, no matter their circumstance. However, Damon believes society has too much faith in technology to save it from the bigger perils of global warming and climate change.
This latter belief was at the core of his recent work The Rise and Fall of the Carbon Civilisation, which he co-authored with colleague Dr Patrick Moriarty.
In the book, the authors argue that technologists must always be ready to point out the limitations of technology, and that society must accept that fundamental changes to the way we live, and not new advances in science and innovation, are our best chance of avoiding environmental disaster.
"As a purveyor of technology you have to be your own worst critic because people trust your opinion, so you should be the most assertive about the failings of what you are doing," Damon says.
"This means that for me, once you have undertaken full assessments of the capabilities of the technology within the context of the problems we face, you pretty quickly realise that what we can do is very limited. To quote from our book, ‘An umbrella, no matter how strong, is unlikely to protect you from a tsunami.’”
