Biography

Local responses to a shrinking globe

“Demography deals with issues that are really of the upmost importance in the world, like the historically high population growths that the rest of the world – particularly the developing countries – is experiencing at the moment,” says Associate Professor Dharma Arunachalam.

The core of Dharma's work is in family demography. He studies family formation, changes, marriages, cohabitations and child bearing.

While at the University of Waikato, for instance, Dharma wrote The New Zealand family from 1840: a demographic history, with colleagues David Ian Pool and Janet Sceats. The book was the culmination of ten years of work in New Zealand and is an authoritative history of the New Zealand family over 165 years.

Dharma became interested in demography via his studies in mathematics and statistics, in part because it sheds light on one of the biggest problems that we are facing – human overpopulation.

Dharma believes that we all must confront overpopulation, particularly through our immigration policies.

“Countries such as Australia are not immune to the influences of population growth in the rest of the world. There have to be some ways of managing these extra people. Whether we like it or not, we have to do our share of managing the issues that come with the extra people.”

Dharma is currently engaged in an ARC Discovery project, with Doctor Genevieve Heard, which is looking at changing Australian family patterns over the last ten years.
Other upcoming work will be looking at Indian migrants in Australia.

“I will be looking at how they have done over the last 20 to 25 years, in terms of economic achievement, and in terms of being successful in transmitting their cultural values to their children.”

The research will explore their labour market integration, income levels and population distribution across the country. In addition, it will look at bilingualism amongst second generation Indian immigrants.

With Drs Ernest Healy and RoseAnne Misajon, Dharma is also researching immigrants’ social cohesion and integration in Australia, as indicated by volunteering rates.
“This will particularly focus on volunteering activities among the ethnic minorities, to see what extent people of non-European backgrounds volunteer, and if they don’t, what could be the potential barriers.”

Dharma’s third research project in the works is on child health in India. With a colleague from the subcontinent, he is working on a number of articles and a book, Child Malnutrition and Social Structure in India, which is expected to be released by Sage Publications.

Dharma is also keen to supervise students on research topics within, and beyond, his core areas of interest.
