Dr Debra Griffiths is a senior lecturer and Deputy Head of Campus at Monash, Peninsula campus. Debra is a registered nurse, midwife and lawyer with many years clinical experience in acute care nursing and then midwifery, working in Australia and overseas. Debra practised law in Melbourne and upon joining the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Monash has further developed her passion for law as it relates to, or influences everyday clinical practice.
Debra teaches students of nursing and midwifery, medicine, paramedic studies, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Debra’s PhD explored the experiences of nurses and medical practitioners when patients decided to forgo acute care treatment.
Debra is currently engaged in research projects examining end of life decisions-making, violence against staff working in the emergency department, documentation gaps of elderly residents transferred to hospital, the establishment and evaluation of an intro-professional simulation laboratory and associated educational strategies and competency standards of enrolled nurses. Debra supervises local and international research students in the area of patient safety: midwives and complementary therapies: chronic illness. nursing and midwifery.
Debra was an inaugural Director of the Nursing and Midwifery Health Program Victoria, which provides assistance for nurses, midwives and students with drug, alcohol and mental health problems. She is also a member of Peninsula Health’s Human Ethics and Research Committee.
