Biography

Professor Danielle Mazza is the Head of the Department of General Practice at Monash University.  Her major interest is in translational research, with particular focus on closing evidence practice gaps in preventive care, women’s sexual and reproductive health, cancer screening, and guideline development and implementation using patient-based strategies.

Professor Danielle Mazza holds the Chair of General Practice at Monash University.  During the course of her career, she has attracted over 3 million dollars in competitive funding as a chief investigator and has 48 publications in international and national refereed journals (34 as first author).  She is the author of the textbook “Women’s health in general practice”, which is a recommended text for the RACGP’s core curriculum.

Danielle has a strong interest in guideline implementation.  In 2000, Danielle led a government consultancy to “develop an implementation strategy for evidence-based, best practice clinical guidelines for general practice in Australia”. She currently chairs the implementation subcommittee of the RACGP’s Quality Care committee and has previously been a member of the implementation subcommittee of the National Antenatal Care Guidelines and the review committee for the Department of Health and Ageing’s Pregnancy Lifescripts implementation resources.  Danielle has methodological expertise in guideline development and the implementation, development, and trial of complex interventions.

Since 2005, Danielle has developed a program of translational research focusing on the early diagnosis of cancer and improving the delivery and uptake of preventive care in the general practice setting.  She has led or been a member of several evidence-based guideline development groups including investigating symptoms of lung cancer and the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre Guideline Development Group for the Follow Up Care of Women with Ovarian Cancer.  Danielle is currently a member of the executive of the Primary Care Collaborative Cancer Clinical (PC4) Trials Group and is CIA of a large project competitively funded by Cancer Australia, which aims to develop and implement a guide for general practitioners for the early detection and referral of lung cancer. She is a clinical leader in general practice in cervical cancer prevention and gynaecological cancers, as demonstrated by her membership of the Safety and Monitoring Committee for the National Cervical Screening Program and the Medical Services Advisory Committees on Human Papilloma Virus: Triage for Pap Smears (2008-2009) and Liquid Based Cytology (2008-2009).

In 2007, Danielle was awarded a National Institute of Clinical Studies (NHMRC) – Health Contribution Fund Foundation Fellowship. She has also been awarded other national and international prizes including the Jean Hailes Memorial Prize (Australian menopause Society), the Roger Wurm Award (Aust Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynaecology), the Frances Hardey Faulding Memorial Fellowship (RACGP), the Alan Chancellor Memorial Award (RACGP), and the Myriam De Senarclens Award (International Psychosomatic Obstetrics & Gynaecology).
