Biography

Since 1990 I have been researching and writing about realist and documentary film with a special interest in Australian feature cinema. More recently I have been interested in American cinema. In 1996 I published Mapping the Imaginary: Ross Gibson's Camera Natura. Since that book I have written Australian Post-War Documentary Film: An Arc of Mirrors - on including the work of the Melbourne Realist Film Unit, the films of John Heyer, Cecil Holmes and R. Maslyn Williams. In 2008 Brian McFarlane and I wrote the book Michael Winterbottom for the Manchester UP's British Directors. In 2007 I began work with Con Verevis and Noel King on our Australian Research Council funded Australian Film Theory and Criticism project which has yielded many interviews and articles. At the moment I am writing a book on Sean Penn for Wallflower's Director's Cuts series. I teach Australian Film Studies and Documentary film Studies and supervise PhD students in documentary film, experimental film, Australian film, film history and realist film studies.

I am also the Editor of the international refereed scholarly journal Studies in Documentary Film {ISSN: 17503280}
