Biography

The flexible future of solar cells

The solar cells of the not too distant future will be cheap, flexible and available in colours to suit a range of homes. The man behind the technology that will produce these next generation cells, Professor Yi-Bing Cheng, is confident his work will one day adorn the roofs of residential homes across Australia.

 

Yi-Bing began the new millennium searching for a fresh research path. A world-class ceramist, or inorganic materials engineer, he had already achieved great success as one of the leading researchers behind the development of fire-proof, polymer-ceramic cabling technology, widely recognised as one of the biggest breakthroughs in fire-performance cables in 20 years. 

However, the growing chorus of scientific debate about the challenges of climate change convinced Yi-Bing to apply his knowledge in the field of energy research.

"I had started to look for a new direction, and at the time environmental issues were already being discussed at scientific conferences, even if they were not a dominant issue in the public like they are now," Yi-Bing says.

"So I wanted to work in clean energy, and being a ceramist I had expertise in the area of inorganic materials. I also wanted to work in the field of nanotechnology. So I began to search for research that would combine these three elements. 

"After an extensive literature review I came across dye sensitive solar cells, and this has dominated my research for the past 10 years."

Early models of dye sensitive solar cells had been in development since the early 1990s. They offer advantages over conventional silicon-based solar cells as they are transparent and so can be coloured to match architectural designs. They also use titanium oxide a nanostructured material (commonly used in house paint and toothpaste) that makes them light weight and cheap to produce.

Yi-Bing was able to take these advantages even further. He demonstrated that plastic could be used to replace the glass traditionally employed to support the dye sensitised titanium film and allow sunlight to penetrate the cell, generating the flow of energy-giving electrons. 

He patented a new technology to produce titanium oxide film encased in plastic that had low electrical resistance despite not being subjected to the conventional high-temperature firing process that would normally destroy such a polymer.

That breakthrough allowed the new solar cells to become as flexible as a bank note, and over the past five years Yi-Bing has been at the forefront of research to prove that a new generation of solar cells can be produced in much the same way as Australia's currency is printed.

Less than six years after he turned into this new research direction, Yi-Bing became a key member of the Victorian Organic Solar Cell Consortium, a joint initiative between Monash, The University of Melbourne and CSIRO which has received more than $18 million in funding from government and industry to develop the flexible solar cells into a commercial reality.

"We have made very good progress on the project so far," Yi-Bing says.

"We have been able to prove the cells can be continuously produced in an automated process, and we are working to show that they can be applied as a flexible plastic, laminated or directly printed on to roof steel. 

"I knew nothing about solar cells 10 years ago, and I initially had no dream this research was going to achieve on such large scale."
