Professor Williams has a distinguished research career spanning over 30 years in the areas of innate immunity and cancer biology. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and reviews. He is internationally recognised for his work in innate immunity, and for his studies on protein kinase R, an important innate immune signalling molecule. He has also gained prominence in the field of RNA interference.
Professor Bryan Williams is currently Director of the Monash Institute of Medical Research, where he also leads the Centre for Cancer Research. In addition, he holds an appointment as a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University. He received his PhD in 1976 from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. Following postdoctoral training at the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill, London, he held faculty positions at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada, and was Chairman of the Department of Cancer Biology at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He was also an Associate Director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Cleveland. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Immunology in the Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Professor Williams received the 1990 Milstein Award from the International Society of Interferon and Cytokine Research (ISICR) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing interferon research for the treatment of human diseases. He was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 1997, and was President of the ISICR from 1998 to 1999. In 2005 he shared the Maurice Saltzman Award from the Mt Sinai Health Care Foundation, for his leadership contribution to the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2006 he received the Dolph Adams Award for the most highly cited review article published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology and in 2008 the Boltzmann Award for international research collaboration, awarded by the European Cytokine Society.
Professor Williams is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Marshall Edwards Inc., a NASDAQ listed company involved in the clinical development of cancer therapeutics. He is Chairman of the Board of BioGrid Australia Ltd and is also a Member of the Oncology Science Advisory Committee for BioGrid. He is the Australian Director for Pacific Edge Pty Ltd, a cancer diagnostics company, and is a Member of the Board of Directors for Cancer Trials Australia. Professor Williams is a Member of the Victorian Cancer Agency Consultative Council, a Member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of Cancer Council Victoria, and serves on the Management Committee for the Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium. He is Chair of the Biopharmaceuticals, Biomaterials and Medical Devices Advisory Committee for Therapeutic Innovation Australia, and is a Member of the Board of Trustees and a Member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Hope Funds for Cancer Research. He is also a Member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of Amarillo Biosciences Inc., Pacific Edge Ltd and an NIH program grant to the Salk Institute: “Global Innate Immune Responses to HIV-1 Infection”.
Professor Williams is Chair of the Selection Panel for the Victorian Premier's Award for Health and Medical Research. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research, Viral Immunology, Journal of Virology, Faculty of 1000, Cytokine and Growth Factor Reviews and Frontiers in Cancer Genetics, and is Chair of the ISICR Publications Committee.
