I worked for many years as a professional actor before beginning an academic career, appearing with major companies such as Sydney Theatre Company, Belvoir St Theatre, Q Theatre and Redstitch, as well as working extensively in television, creating ongoing roles in several ABC series. As a writer / performer, I have created two one-person shows which have toured Australia, Europe and America, and as a playwright I have had several works produced and held positions as Writer in Residence with the Q Theatre (1989), and Affiliate Writer with Melbourne Theatre Company (2008).
From 1995 I spent time in Ireland and completed a BA in English and an MA in Old and Middle English at University College Cork. During this time I wrote a performance translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, and I have toured this translation extensively, including a recorded version for ABC Radio National in 2007. I am currently completing a PhD in comparative models (contemporary and medieval) of storytelling practices.
I have supervised Honours work in fields of performance making, exploration of orality, Shakespearean performance, and storytelling. I am currently teaching in the fields of medieval theatre, contemporary performance practice, site-specific theatre, and performance making.
