Biography

Associate Professor Ros Gleadow is co-ordinator the Core science program in the Faculty of Science and conducts research in the School of Biological Sciences Her research interests can be classified under the broad headings of chemical ecology and ecophysiology. Particular interets are:

  • Environmental and molecular regulation of secondary metabolism in plants, especially cyanogenesis
  • Plant-animal interactions
  • Climate change and its impact on plant growth and composition
  • Food security
  • Science communication and education

Current Projects:

  • Environmental and genetic regulation of cyanogenesis in forage sorghum
  • Impact of CO2 and climate change on the growth and nutritive value of cassava
  • Regulation of secondary metabolism in Eucalyptus
  • Chemcial ecology of mistletoes
  • Engaging students in science

Ros Gleadow graduated with a PhD in Botany from the University of Melbourne in 1999. She is currently co-ordinator of the core undergraduate science program at Monash University and leads the Monash Cyanogenesis Group within the School of Biological Sciences. She has worked extensively on the effect of environmental variables such as drought and elevated carbon dioxide on the partitioning of resources between growth and defence (especially cyanide production) in plants. This research has led to a series of projects that aim to reduce the amount of cyanide in the diet of humans and animals. This research has resulted in several industry-sponsored projects and a collaborative project with health and agricultural scientists in Africa. She also pioneered the use of multimedia in the teaching of Biology in Australia, winning several awards. She is on several national advisory committees and is currently President of the Australian Society of Plant Scientists
