Biography

I graduated from the sociology program at the University of Queensland in 2001, receiving the ‘Dean’s Commendation for an Outstanding Research Higher Degree Thesis’ (Ph.D.). After spending three years at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, I joined Monash University in 2005.

My current research investigates the social, economic and political implications of technological transformation and, in particular, the movement from analogue-print to digital-convergent media systems. This transformation is explored through case studies that examine sports media, environmental media and protest, and online and digital media communications. I am the co-author (with David Rowe) of Sport Beyond Television: The Internet, Digital Media and the Rise of Networked Media Sport, which is published by Routledge in New York (2012). My many articles and chapters have appeared in widely-read and cited international journals and edited collections, including Media, Culture & Society, Journalism: Theory, Practice & Criticism, Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies, New Media & Society, Information, Communication & Society, European Journal of Cultural Studies and Television & New Media.

I also enjoy supervising postgraduate researchers working on a range of topics, including sports media, e-government, online gaming, and social networking sites. In addition to writing opinion pieces for national newspapers, I am a regular commentator on media culture and sport for print, broadcast and digital news outlets.
